CALLAO MUSEUMS

The small selection of museums within Callao cannot help but be somewhat overshadowed by the enormous selection available close by in Lima. However, that said, Callao does contain a couple of very notable museums, which will suit anyone wishing to learn more about the city's rich military and naval past.

Located within the historical fortress of the Fortaleza del Real Felipe is Callao's Military Museum, which is known locally as the Museo del Ejército and well worth a visit. Alternatively, the Museo Naval (Navy Museum) allows you to see an actual logbook that was once the property of famed Peruvian naval hero, Admiral Grau.

The Museo del Ejército is home to various military and weaponry artefacts chronicling the history of the army of Peru. These exhibits include the 'Knight of the Twelve Cannons' (Caballero de los Doce Canones), which gained its name after the 12 guns used to point outwards from the fortress, towards oncoming invaders. Other highlights include the Governor's House, various armoured vehicles and tanks, historical ammunition depots, two tall towers, which boast excellent views across the port and are named the 'Tower of the King' and the 'Tower of the Queen'.


Museo Naval (Navy Museum)

The maritime history of Callao and Lima is very much celebrated within the Museo Naval, on the Avenida Jorge Chávez. Visitors can expect to discover a wealth of paintings and uniforms relating to Peru's naval forces. Situated close to the port and the Plaza Grau, the Navy Museum is brimming with war relics, many of which relate to battles with the Spanish and Chilean navies, who attacked this part of Peru on several occasions.
